Our grade 7 students were fortunate enough to have a tour of Newport Art Museum last fall with me (Nicolle Icart), John Harvey and the help of the cluster grade 7 teachers here at Thompson Middle School. During our visit, we saw two pieces by Dale Chihuly — an RI resident artist and a graduate of Rhode Island School of Design.
When the tree project came about we knew we wanted to work with inspirations from the trip as well as working with environmentally sound media. Students in grade 7 do a unit in science based on recycling that we coattail off of as well. We did an introductory lesson on Dale Chihuly’s art during art class time. The end product of the floral bottle tops, each painted by a seventh grader, followed to emulate the brilliance of Dale Chihuly’s vibrant eclectic masterpieces.
